Happy Bad Ass Birthday Mama

Emily's birthday was last Sunday, November 7th. As always, it was a weekend long celebration.  It started off with lunch at our house on Saturday with friends from high school.

Lauren, Lucas and Paul were kind enough to hang out with Scarlett on Saturday night, so that Emily and I could go to the Blazers game, primarily, so Emily could see her NBA boyfriend, Jarrett Jack.

Sunday morning, we went to brunch at the Sapphire Hotel with Emily's parents, Debbie and Dunny, along with Lauren, Lucas and Paul, and Nicole and John.  I don't know if the food caught Emily's attention at all, but I do know the all you can drink mimosa did.

Sunday evening, we ordered Thai food from Baiyok Thai, with Sally, Tom, Hope and Esther.

At the end of the weekend, Scarlett was all partied out.

Happy Birthday, Mama.  Now can I go to bed?

Applesauce Rap

Her hand gestures have me imaging that she's making a rap video.  What would my baby rap about? Teething pain?  How wicked good applesauce is?

"Almost nine months old /feeling pretty swell/ but naptime comes and I'm mad as hell-o /dad gimme some applesauce/don't look at me that way/you know I'm the boss ".

Penguins & Elephants!

Took another trip to the zoo on a beautiful Thursday afternoon.  Me and Scarlett met Aunt Sally, and cousins Hope and Esther there.  Scarlett saw the Penguins for the first time.  Here she is, looking at their cage.  

She has progressively liked the zoo more and more each time we have gone, which is exciting for me, since I love it there.  

And, here's the three female elephants, along with 2 year old Sammy.

Thanks again, Hoesing family, for the Zoo Membership.  The birthday gift that keeps on giving.

Electricity

Today for the first time, we fed her tahini.  Mashed up with an over-ripe banana.  She liked it and, even better, I ate her leftovers smeared on crackers.  Up next: beets, maybe?

The Parenting Fog

Charlie and I think Scarlett has one of those Men In Black memory erasers, and that she uses it at night.  She hasn’t been sleeping well lately because of her teeth (did I mention there are 3 new ones coming in at once?  THREE!).  So in the mornings, we wake up and can’t remember if we got up with her during the night, or we’ll remember getting up once and think we got up a second time, but we’re not sure.  We ask: did you hear me get up?  Was that last night, or the night before?  Which, is actually fine, because I’m much happier when I think I’ve gotten a lot of sleep.  But it makes me think that parenting at night is like being drunk- you’re walking around in this haze and afterwards, it’s hard to recall what exactly happened.

Scarlett is a little unsure what book to read or toy to play with.

Baby's First Halloween

For her first Halloween, Scarlett asked her dad to make her a sushi costume.  Specifically, she wanted to be salmon nigiri.

 

He made one for cousin Esther too.

And, a witch costume for Hope.

Scarlett spent most of the morning's donuts and cidar party crawling around in the dirt.

 
Then, after a bath and a partial costume change, she played with her cousins.

She was the most adorable and delicious little piece of sushi ever.

Also, we bought four bags of candy, thinking it would be more than enough.  We didn't get many trick or treaters last year.  But, around 8pm, a group of about 20 people came onto our porch and cleaned us out.  We had to turn off our porch light because we had no candy left.  I guess that means it was a successful Halloween.
