Baby's First Halloween

For her first Halloween, Scarlett asked her dad to make her a sushi costume.  Specifically, she wanted to be salmon nigiri.

He made one for cousin Esther too.
And, a witch costume for Hope.
Scarlett spent most of the morning's donuts and cidar party crawling around in the dirt.

Then, after a bath and a partial costume change, she played with her cousins.
She was the most adorable and delicious little piece of sushi ever.
Also, we bought four bags of candy, thinking it would be more than enough.  We didn't get many trick or treaters last year.  But, around 8pm, a group of about 20 people came onto our porch and cleaned us out.  We had to turn off our porch light because we had no candy left.  I guess that means it was a successful Halloween.

A Leisurely Saturday

It's been so rainy out lately, we've stopped our twice-daily trips to the park, and the many walks around the neighborhood.  Today instead, Scarlett played inside with daddy...

...did some light reading...
...lunched on a powercord (electrolytes, they're good for you!)...
...visited with Holli...

...and tried on her cousin's Halloween witch hat.

She also got a new tooth!  We've been watching her gums lately and knew the tooth was coming, but today it finally poked through.  I find this to be VERY exciting.

Send me to Grandma's house!

Scarlett loved this box so much, I think she's going to go CRAZY at Christmas.  There will be So. Many. Boxes.

Long May You Run

On Saturday, Charlie finished his second half marathon in two weeks.  Which means, he basically ran a marathon this month.  Sortof.  His time for this second race, the Run Like Hell, was 1 hour, 48 minutes and some change.  I told him not to shame the family name by letting Jon beat him, and he obliged.  Scarlett and I had a sign at the finish line that said RUN DADDY, I wish I had a picture of it.  Instead, I only have these few blurry pictures.  But, they're only blurry because he was running so damn fast.

That's Jon in the blue shorts and white shirt.

Pumpkin Patch

On Saturday, we took Scarlett on her very first corn maze and pumpkin patch trip.  I've always thought this seems like the kind of thing people with kids do.  We'd tried to go last weekend, but apparently the line was too long to get onto Sauvie Island so we had to scrap the trip.  This week, the weather was sub par and everyone else was indoors.  So we drove out there and lost ourselves in a maze of maize.

There was a lot of corn.  Note, in Charlie's hand, that he found some corn, popped it, and we ate it as a snack.  How resourceful.

I wanted to find an 18 pound pumpkin to put our 18 pound baby on, but I bet these pumpkins are bigger.

There was also a petting zoo.

Waving

There will probably be a lot of high chair pictures coming up, since it's the only place where we can get Scarlett to sit still.  Excitingly, she is learning to wave.

Apple Tastin'

On Saturday, we planned on going to the pumpkin patch and the corn maze with Lucy, her parents and both sets of her grandparents.  But the world had other plans- the line of cars to get onto Sauvie Island was so long that we scrapped the plan and went to an apple tasting instead.

And the next day, Scarlett tried applesauce for the first time.  She loved it.  We've been trying to teach her to use sign language to say 'more', but instead of the sign we use, she just pounds her hand on the tray to signal that she wants more.  She ate a whole bowl of applesauce and pounded her hand on the tray for more.

Blurry Baby

Our newest problem is that Scarlett is SO mobile, that we cannot get a good picture of her.  She won't sit still, so all our pictures are blurry.  So, here's the most recent and best shots of our blurry baby:

Tofu

Scarlett has discovered the packaging tastes just about the same as the contents.  Who am I to tell her otherwise?  It's like recycling, right?  Using all parts of the product?  Meh.  It's tofu.  She'll mix the packaging with some cardboard and a carrot, and have herself a fine soup.  Eat on, my love.

8 Months

Happy 8-month birthday, Scarlett Ray!  You have accomplished so much over the past few weeks, including:

  • Pulling yourself up into standing position in your crib
  • Chewing on power cords, heater vents, wheel spokes- really anything dirty or dangerous
  • Eating tofu- first you didn't like it, but I tried again and you gobbled it right up.  Just like mama!
  • Eating, and disliking, yogurt.
  • Crawling everywhere- now without any trouble.  You're suddenly so sure in your movement and you're going fast.
  • Taking a sudden interest in the terrier, Tavish, chasing him around and trying to pull his hair
  • I FORGOT: You learned to high-five.  You love it, it makes you smile and giggle.  Although, you currently think 'high five' means to slap hands a whole bunch of times in a row, more like a high fifteen.

Tonight, I want to give you some peaches or nectarines.  This will be your first sweet food, I think you're going to love it.

And you have another tooth coming in, on the top.  This has made the past day pretty hard, because I think your little gums are hurting.  I feel so sad for you.  You woke up at 11 last night just sobbing and reaching out for mom and dad.  We took turns holding you and singing to you.  We're here, baby, I promise.  We love you.  Happy 8 months.
